QBx Mode of Action

Mode of Action QBx based wound products

MMP’s are zinc-dependent proteins that propagate in tissue after it becomes damaged. Once healthy tissue is damaged, MMP’s begin removing damaged connective tissue at the injury site, preparing the wound bed for healing. In a normal wound MMP’s are valuable, natural and a positive aspect of the healing process. MMP dependent enzymatic processes help the body to break down and/or remove damaged tissue. Once this removal is completed, these enzymatic processes slow down enabling the body to form new tissue at the unjured site. In a chronic wound the enzymatic process does not slow down and MMP levels remain too high, preventing new tissue formation. MMP levels in chronic wounds may be over 30 times higher compared to
traumatic or normal healing wounds.

QBx is engineered to control MMP levels. It also reduces inflammation, reduces permanent scar tissue, and speeds up healing to achieve full wound closure. Typically, diabetic foot ulcers that do not respond to standard treatment, heal within 4-8 weeks. Of the three phases in the (otherwise continuous) wound-healing process, inflammatory, proliferative and remodeling, QBx is most active after the first (inflammatory) phase.

A publication by van den Berg et.al. (Journal of Woundcare, Volume 12 nr. 10, 2003) stated additional benefits of PHI-5. The ointment also inhibits both polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMN) production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the activation of the complement system (part of the non-adaptive humoral immune system) acting as a scavenger and inhibitor of superoxide ions. This slows down a cascade of tissue destruction. QBx is exceptionally efficacious in healing non-responding or slow-healing chronic wounds and in many cases has closed wounds that have failed to respond to many of the best known medical devices on the market.

Most non-responding chronic wounds will begin healing as soon as MMP levels are brought back to balance. With QBx based treatment this typically occurs within 2-6 weeks (10-14 days to bring the MMP levels back, and 4-6 weeks to close the wound).

QBx ointment contains a synthetic blend of trace elements (metal ions) including zinc, calcium, potassium, rubidium, and citric acid and polyethylene glycol.
